Tibet, Ice Caverns on Rongbuk Glacier, Mallory Expedition
Ice Caverns on the Rongbuk Glacier located in the Himalaya of southern Tibet. The English climber George Mallory first explored the main Rongbuk Valley and its glacier while searching for possible routes to the summit of Mount Everest during the first British Everest reconnaissance expedition of 1921. This photograph dates from Mallorys expedition in 1922, the photographer was Captain John Morris, who was tone of the groups translators and involved in organisational tasks. This was the first mountaineering expedition with the express aim of making the first ascent of the worlds highest peak. After two unsuccessful summit attempts the expedition ended on the third attempt when seven porters died as the result of a group-induced avalanche. Date: 1922
