Thessaloniki - General Maurice-Paul-Emmanuel Sarrail (1856-1929) crossing a street with his French Admirals. The French Army of the Orient was despatched to Thessaloniki in October 1915 as part of the Allied expeditionary force which landed at Thessaloniki as the base for operations against pro-German Bulgaria during WWI. This culminated in the establishment of the Macedonian or Salonika Front.. Date: 1915
