Tessyman family, seaweed farmers, Dartmouth, Devon
George Tessyman, seaweed farmer, working in his attic laboratory, where he processed the seaweed to produce agar-agar, a jelly-like substance used in the manufacture of such diverse products as jelly desserts, salad dressings, laxatives, oil-drawing lubricants, toothpaste and cosmetics. Georges interest in seaweed was first sparked while he was serving in the Royal Navy, and the Tessymans were the first people in Britain to harvest seaweed as a means of enhancing food production.
