Sunken cruiser, Bruges Canal, Zeebrugge, Belgium, WW1
An American photo of a sunken British cruiser in the Bruges Canal at the sea port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, during the First World War, soon after the Zeebrugge Raid (23 April 1918). Another cruiser can be seen in the distance on the right. Three old British cruisers, HMS Thetis, Intrepid and Iphigenia, were filled with concrete and sunk to create a barrier as part of the raid. The port was used as a base by the German navy. Date: May 1918
