The British submarine the " D 4" which carried a quick-firing gun mounted forward of the conning tower upon a moving platform placed inside the hull. The gun was raised for action by hydraulic machinery. When the boat was about to dive, the gun was lowered and covered by a watertight door. Date: 1914
