Sphere cover - Zeebrugge raid, crew fix Union flag, WW1
Men from HMS Vindictive during the Zeebrugge Raid pictured fixing the Union flag on the mole before returning to their ship. The Zeebrugge raid failed in its objective of sinking old British warships to block German U-boats in harbour, with the loss of more than 200 men. However, the Allies reported on the episode optimistically and this illustration by Fortunino Matania on the front cover of The Sphere seeks to find the positive patriotism in what was something of a disaster. Date: 1918
