Sledge party leaving an invalid in an ice cave, British Arct
Engraving showing a sledging party leaving an invalid, and a carer, in an ice cave; then heading back to base to fetch help, British Arctic Expedition, 1875-1876. Many of the men on this expedition suffered from scurvy, which was never more dangerous than when the sick were participating in sledging operations. In the summer of 1875 the British Admiralty sent Captain George Nares with two ships, HMS Alert and HMS Discovery, to make an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. Although the attempt was unsuccessful, a new furthest North record was set, the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island were charted and much scientific data gathered
