Sir Francis Drake (1542-1596)
Engraving of Sir Francis Drake (1542-1596), Elizabethan explorer and seafarer. In 1577 he and his crew became the first Englishmen to circumnavigate the globe, bringing home an enormous pile of plunder. In 1588 he was Captain of the Revenge and Vice-Admiral of the English Fleet in the action against the Spanish Armada. He died in the Caribbean in January 1596 and was buried at sea
