The Sexton and Sand Table at Dennington Church
The Sexton and Sand Table at Dennington Church, Suffolk. This fascinating tray can now be found in the north aisle of the church (now a village museum), and was used to teach village children to read and write in the early 19th century. Similar sand tables (known as Abax) were used in Ancient Greece to teach students writing, geometry, and calculations! As far removed from a wi-fi enabled electronic whiteboard as it is possible to imagine!! Date: circa 1900s
