A Sectional Boat used by Sir Henry Morton Stanley in Africa
Engraving of a sectional boat, used by Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) during his 1874 expedition to central Africa, being carried by a number of local porters. During this expedition Stanley charted Lake Tanganika, passed down the Lualaba to Nyangwe and traced the Congo to the sea. Sectional boats, such as the one depicted, were useful in this kind of exploration as, when a waterway became impassable, the boat could be easily dismantled and carried to the next part of navigable waterway
