Scouts during Wartime
Fitting helmets at commencement of hospital duties. From the outbreak of war this Troop has continued duties at an East London Hospital, despite the boredom of the first 12 months. When, without warning, bombs began to fall like hailstones in their district, the Scouts were not found wanting. The younger ones filled bottles and bowls, tabulated clothes, helped in casualty wards, running messages etc. The older ones assisted in blood transfusions and even helped in the operating theatre! The Medical Offocer has expressed the hope that they will continue their help when the war is over. In a letter to the Scoutmaster the Medical Officer writes, May I take this opportunity of making known to you and the boys the admiration of my colleagues and self for their splendid behaviour during the past night?... During those fateful early hours of this morning, when even we Pros were feeling the stress, I was still greeted on arrival with a bright smile and a cheery word, which did help so very much. I imagine that you feel immensly proud of them all and I. too, am happy at the thought of my small connection with them. This is only one report, from one hospital. It is happening all over Britain.
