Saint Augustine
St Augustine (circa first third of the 6th century probably 26th May 604) - He was sent to Britain by Pope Gregory as a missionary. Just before he began his journey to Britain with about 40 companions, he asked Pope Gregory to let him stay in Rome because he found his mission so daunting. However in 587, Augustine landed on the coast of Kent and his efforts to convert the native Britons were immediately successful. St. Augustine became the first Bishop of Canterbury in 600. Date: circa 620 AD
