Rua Conselheiro Enes - Beira - Mozambique. As a writer, politician and later as High Commissioner in Mozambique, Antonio Enes (1848-1901) was an energetic defender of Portugals colonial possessions in Africa in the face of twin threats from an expansionist and aggressive British Empire and native uprisings. Beira was originally developed by the Portuguese Mozambique Company in the 19th century, and directly developed by the Portuguese colonial government from 1947 until Mozambique gained its independence from Portugal in 1975.
