Marriage of Princess Alice to Prince Louis
The marriage of Princess Alice, third child and second daughter of Queen Victoria, to Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, in the dining room of Osborne House, the Royal residence on the Isle of Wight. Between the announcement of their engagement and the wedding itself, the Prince Consort, Albert, had died in December 1861, and the subsequent long period of mourning overshadowed the ceremony, a mood not helped by dreary weather on the day. Above the altar is the celebrated painting by Winterhalter of Queen Victoria, Albert and the Royal children, and above the doorway to the left is a portrait of the Duchess of Kent, mother of Queen Victoria, who had died in March 1861. Watched by her mother, seated to the left, and family, Alice was given away by her uncle, Alberts brother Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and had four bridesmaids - her sisters Helena, Louise and Beatrice, and Princess Anna, the sister of Louis.
