Curtiss NC-4 flying boat arriving at Plymouth, 31 May 1919. The flying boat - a design collaboration between the US Navy and Curtiss - accomplished the first aerial crossing of the Atlantic ocean (by stages via the Azores). Departing from Trepassy Bay, Newfoundland, on 16 May 1919, the flying boat arrived at Lisbon - via Ponta Delgada - on 27 May, and then made a symbolic flight to Plymouth from where the original Pilgrim Fathers departed for America in the Mayflower on 6 September 1620.
