Ringing the gas alarm on the Western Front by Philip Dadd
A British gas sentry rings a medieval church bell bearing figures of saints and armorial insignia (formerly hung in the shattered belfry shown in the background), to alert troops of a German gas attack. This front cover image was painted by Philip Dadd, a regular contributor to The Sphere. It was to be his last picture for the magazine as he was killed in France on 2 August 1916. Date: 1916
