The Republic of Ireland proclaimed
Eire becomes a republic on the anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916: the General Post Office in O Connell Street, focal point of the rebellion, here the saluting-base for the military parade in Dublin on Easter Monday. The president Mr. T. O Kelly and the Premier, Mr. Costello attended the ceremonies. Under the Republic of Ireland Act, Eire became a Republic at midnight on Easter Sunday, April 17th 1949. A 21-gun salute from O Connell Bridge and the singing of the Irish National Anthem heralded the birth of the new State
