Queen Elisabeth of Romania playing the piano
Elisabeth of Wied, Queen Consort of Romania (1869-1914), the spouse of Carol I of Romania. Born Pauline Elisabeth Ottilie Luise zu Wied, also widely known by her literary name of Carmen Sylva. This wonderful postcard photograph of circa 1900, shows the Queen playing the piano with a small orchestra within the Royal Palace in Bucharest, Romania. Underneath in the Queens own hand, is a passage from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, concluded with her signature. This is a further indicator of her literary interest at the time. Date: circa 1900
