Prince Louis of Battenberg with his sons
Prince Louis of Battenberg (1854-1921), British First Sea Lord in 1914 with his sons, George (right) and Louis (Lord Louis Mountbatten). During the first few months of World War I, anti-German feeling among the British public forced him to resign. The Prince had taken British nationality at the age of fourteen and those who knew him had no doubt of his loyalty. Prince George of Battenberg continued on active service and the younger Prince Louis (left) joined him as a midshipman shortly after the Battle of Jutland. When the same tide of anti-German feeling forced the royal family to abandon German names and titles their family name became Mountbatten. Prince Louis of Battenberg was married to Princess Victoria of Hesse, eldest daughter of Princess Alice
