Prince Leopolds engagement
Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany (1855-1884) and his future wife, Princess Helen of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1881. The fourth son and eight child of Queen Victoria, Leopold was the most academic of her sons but suffered from haemophilia. The Queen was keen for him to remain at home with her as her assistant, but Leopold attended Oxford in 1872 and began to take an increasingly active role in public life. He had two children with Helen, Princess Alice of Albany and Prince Charles Edward of Albany (later Duke of Saxe-Coburg) who was born posthumously. Leopold travelled to Cannes in 1884 on a recuperative holiday to ease his joint pain. He slipped and fell in the Yacht Club and died later that evening
