Prince John of Wales
Prince John of Wales (1905-1919), youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary, pictured here wearing a dress. Until after the First World War it was normal to dress small boys and girls in the same clothes, with Johns cropped haircut signifying more effectively his gender. John developed epilepsy at the age of four but lived a normal life as the youngest child of the family. As his epilepsy worsened, doctors advised he would not live long and so in 1917, he was settled at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate with Mrs Charlotte ( Lala ) Bill, who had nursed him all his life. The family visited when they could and wrote regularly and his grandmother, Queen Alexandra was at nearby Sandringham House. It was a caring environment: John had his own garden and toys and was taken on outings. He died at Wood Farm on January 18th 1919
