Preparing for the Unveiling of the Victoria Memorial

Washing down the marble of the basins at the foot of the Queen Victoria Memorial in March, prior to its auspicious unveiling in the presence of King George V, Queen Mary and Kaiser Wilhelm II on May 16th 1911. At that point, the rest of the memorial was covered in poles and scaffolding. The memorial, which stands outside Buckingham Palace, was sculpted by Sir Thomas Brock and the surround, composed of 2300 tonnes of white marble, was designed by Sir Aston Webb. Date: 1911
