Portsmouth - Illuminated Tram Car to celebrate French Fleet
Portsmouth - An illuminated Tram Car, decorated to celebrate the French Fleet stationed in Portsmouth during 1905. The Star and Crescent symbol has been used by the City of Portsmouth as its coat of arms since at least the seventeenth century and probably much longer. This symbol is also widely used as an Islamic symbol and is found on the flags of many Islamic nations, and came to Portsmouth due to links via King Richard I to Constantinople and Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus (who captured Richard) during the Third Crusade. Date: 1905
