Pitmen encamped - evicted coal miner and his dwelling
A miner on strike sits despondently outside his makeshift home, his crutch and dog at his side. Due to lengthy strike action resulting from a wage dispute, coal miners and their families in the north east of England were evicted from their cottages, which belonged to the mine owners. They look to waste grounds, lanes and highways to set up temporary homes, resulting in overcrowded and wretched living conditions. Date: 1844
