United States Navy - Goodyear ZSG-3 airship K-120
United States Navy - Goodyear ZSG-3 airship K-120 (BuAer number 33512), based at Oakland Naval Air Station in California, being used as a recruitment billboard for the US Naval Reserve. The K-class blimps originated in 1931 as the USNs first blimp with the car attached to the envelope, as opposed to suspended from cables. Given a variety of designations, with modifications and design changes, this particular K-class started life ca1940 as a ZNPK-3 (Z=airship, N=non-rigid, P=Patrol, K=K-class), the N (for non-rigid) was dropped in 1947 and re-designated again in 1954 as a ZSG-3 (Z=airship, S=anti-submarine, G=Goodyear). The USN fairly rapidly shut down lighter than air operations from 1959, with the last blimps leaving the inventory in 1961. Date: 1959
