United States Air Force - Consolidated XC-99 43-52436
United States Air Force - Consolidated XC-99 First flight 23 November 1947. Flew from San Antonio, Texas to Frankfurt, Germany via Bermuda and the Azores on maiden transatlantic flight and first stop outside USA on 12 August 1953, returning on 19 August, 1953.Following its retirement due to metal fatigue, the XC-99 was placed on public display at Kelly Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. Eventually the air-plane deteriorated and in 1993 was donated to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio. Disassembly of the aircraft began at Kelly Field in April 2004. By the summer of 2008, the XC-99 had been transferred to Dayton. The aircraft was moved again in 2012 to Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson for storage in the dry desert environment to prevent any further corrosion, waiting until funding for restoration is available. Date: 1950s
