A painting by William Rothenstein, entitled The Watch on the Rhine, first exhibited in Canada in 1920. The painting is a comment on the defeat of Germany and the triumph of the Allies. It shows a British howitzer pointing across the River Rhine in Germany, with two pyramidal stacks of shells, and a British sentry standing on guard at the side. Rothenstein, an English artist, was an official war artist for the Canadian War Memorials Fund, and served with the Canadian Army of Occupation in Germany from 1917 to 1920. Date: 1919-1920
