At Wembley Stadium, London, John Mark British Athlete, the last of the touch bearers who had carried the living flame 2000 miles from Greece, lights the Olympic beacon. Attending the opening were the Royal Family, King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth consort, Princess Margaret, Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duchess of Kent, and a crowd of 80, 000 spectators.
