Oberleutnant von Brandis (left) in command of German troops who stormed and took Fort Douaumont in the early days of the Battle of Verdun in World War One. Despite being one of several German officers involved, von Brandis dispatched the report on the capture to German High Command, and was awarded the Pour le Merite medal by the Kaiser.
