Nicosia, Government House ruins
The exterior of Government House in Nicosia, Cyprus, after its destruction by fire on the night of 21 October 1931. The fire was the culmination of a demonstration by 5000 supporters of enosis - the union of Cyprus with Greece. The entire building, the official residence of the Governor of Cyprus Sir Ronald Storrs, was destroyed, along with his collection of many priceless artefacts and works of art, as well as Government archives. In the foreground can be seen an overturned, burned out motor car, one of several official cars which also fell victim to the rioters
