Greek General Trikoupis being taken to Prison at Ala Chehir
Captured Greek General Trikoupis being taken to Prison at Ala Chehir (Alasehir). Nikolaos Trikoupis ) was a Greek general and politician, most notable for his service in the Greco-Turkish War of 19191922, where he was taken as a prisoner of war (as shown here!). He also participated in the 1896 Summer Olympics, where he came third at the military rifle. In almost the final action of the war on 29 August, 1922 while at Karaja Hisar, also known as Ali Veran (modern Allioren, Turkey) near Kutahya, he was attacked by Turkish cavalry and surrendered along with slightly more than 5, 000 men and 300 officers. Trikoupis and General Digenis (CO of II Corps) were taken to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who informed him that he had (without his knowledge!) been appointed as commander-in-chief of the Greek Army in Asia Minor, an episode highlighting the level of confusion in the Greek command! Date: 1922
