Porta Della Carta, Venice
An etching which shows the magnificence of the Porta Della Carta, an illustrious carved marble gateway which sits between the Basilica of San Marco and the Doge's Palace. Built between 1439 and 1442, the feature bears many sculptures, including statues of the Fortress, Justice, Prudence, Hope, and Charity, each representing good qualities that a government should have. Just above the doorway, the statue of Doge Francesco Foscari and the Lion of St. Mark can be seen. Many parts of this masterpiece were designed by the sculptor architects, Giovanni Bon and Bartolomeo Bon. Date: circa 1916
