Oswald Boelcke (1891-1916), German flying ace of the First World War. He is considered to be the father of the German fighter air force, and was the first to formalise rules of air fighting, which he presented as the Dicta Boelcke. Depicted here in the cockpit of his plane -- a commemorative portrait, soon after his death in action. Date: circa 1916
