Canvey Island protest
Residents of Canvey Island, Essex, protest in central London, expressing their opposition to the proposed expansion of the petrochemical industry on the island. Their protest was ultimately successful as the permission to construct an oil refinery was revoked in 1975 when the Health and Safety Executive decided that the residents would face an unacceptable risk. Date: May 1973
