Airstrip B3 Memorial, Free French Sqns, Ste Croix

The first Free French planes landed here on Liberated soil on 13 June 1944 as part of 2nd Tactical Airforce RAF. Present at the unveiling of the Memorial Area was Wing Cdr Johnnie Johnson Britain's leading ace. Following the establishment by General Charles de Gaulle of a French Government-in-Exile after France had surrendered to the Germans in 1940, the FFAF was formed in England. Eventually a dozen squadrons were formed. Date: 2009
