On Marwick Head, five miles east of Dounby in Orkney, stands a crenallated tower built by public subscription to honour the memory of Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850-1916) who was lost in June 1916, when the cruiser HMS Hampshire sank nearby. Off the 667 officers and men on board, only 12 survived. The memorial was dedicated in 1926. Date: circa 1927
