Engineering survey using divers - The Trans-Baikal Railway
The Trans-Baikal Railway - a subsidiary of the Russian Railways headquartered in Chita and serving Zabaykalsky Krai and Amur Oblast. The mainline was built between 1895 and 1905 as part of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Here, divers are being used to survey the riverbed prior to the construction of a railway bridge. Hazards faced for the tens of thousands of workers employed in the construction of the railway included the complex terrain, crossed by ridges, rivers and swamps, permafrost, low winter temperatures, and natural disasters. Date: 1907
