The Silent Wings Memorial, Den Dungen, Holland
This highly original Memorial was designed by local teacher Jos Korsten who is standing beside it. It tells the story of the gliders which landed in the middle of enemy territory in September 1944. The crews of two gliders were sheltered here for 14 days. The Memorial stands within the triangle Vught-Den Dungen-s Hertogenbosch, which was the initial aiming point for all the aircraft engaged in Operation Market (the air part of Market Garden). It was code named ELLIS. Support for the erection of the Memorial came from the Den Dungen Market Garden Committee, local author and photographer Jacq van Eekelen and veteran glider pilot Dan Griffiths who landed here on 18 September 1944. Joss idea was to represent what the civilians saw when they looked up at the beginning of the Operation and that it should be, in his words, a living Monument in that the sky is constantly changing through the cut-out shapes of the gliders.
