Photograph of Old Face Plate Lathe, originally installed in the Soho Foundry of Boulton and Watt, Birmingham which was purchased by Avery in 1895. The lathe taking work up to 26 feet diameter. In the foreground is shown the universal joint, 3-speed gear and differential. This lathe was brought to the Soho Foundry as old equipment in 1796. The driving gear, hidden by the big plate, has wooden teeth which are still in perfect working order [when photographed]. Date: circa 1920
