Joes Bridge on the Belgian-Dutch border
Operation Market Garden was a combined British & American land and air operation planned to break into and around the German defences & then on into Germany itself. The land forces, notably just here the tanks of the Irish Guards, waited on the 17th of September 1944 for the airborne forces to fly over and to clear the way ahead. Under the bridge is a memorial to its capture by the Guards and its naming after Lt Col J.O.E. Vandeleur who commanded the tanks. Date: 2000
