Incredible Patrol Plaque, Elst Town Hall, Holland
Following the failure of Operation Market Garden to establish a foothold across the Rhine at Arnhem, the front line effectively lay along the river itself. This tiled plaque, once in Heteren Town Hall, tells the story of Hugo Sims, Peter Frank, William Canfield, Frederick Becker, Robert Nicholai and Roland Wilbur of 501st PIR who, on the night of 29 October 1944, crossed the Rhine at Heteren, some 18 km west of Arnhem, in rubber dinghies. They landed to the east of Renkum, slipped behind enemy lines, reached the Ede-Arnhem highway and then hid during daylight the following day. That evening they captured thirty-two enemy officers and men and brought them back across the Rhine. Date: 2001
