Horsa Glider Memorial, Wolfheze, Holland
Wolfheze is a small village about 10km to the west of Arnhem beside which the Operation Market Garden 17 September 1944 Landing Zones Z ands (gliders) and Drop Zone X (parachutists) were located. The 1st Airlanding Brigade came down ons and the 1st Parachute Brigade came down on X and Z, though inevitably the areas became mixed. The following day the 4th Parachute Brigade came down on X. The Horsa glider came into service in 1941 and was used by both British and American forces in Normandy and here in Holland. It was made almost entirely of wood (which splintered badly when the aircraft landed) and carried 30 men. The Memorial stands on the eastern edge of LZs and was unveiled on 19 September 2009. It serves also as a marker for the adjacent caravan park in which is an exhibition of airborne miscellanea. Date: 2006
