Childrens Happy Evenings 1890

Children playing and being entertained by women as part of the " childrens happy evenings" initiative, designed to improve attendance in London Board schools by offering evening entertainment for those children with the best attendance records. The scheme was promoted by many women including Mrs Francis Jeune and Miss Edith Heather-Bigg, the honorary secretary. It was well supported by members of the public including; Reverend Jay, Sir James Carmichael, Mr Melver, Lady George Hamilton and the London School Board which provided school premises for use. Shortly after its introduction, school attendance in Marylebone rose by 5%. Date: 1890
