The Burning of Greytown 1854
In response to British taxing of ships using the Nicaragua route to California, the USS Cyane bombarded Greytown with little damage, before landing ashore and setting the town on fire. Greytown was completely destroyed, but due to involvement in the Crimean War at the time, Britain had little resource to do more than formally protest, alongside international outrage at the destruction of the town. The United States refused to apologise.
