Belgian Piron Brigade Memorial, Opheusden, Holland
Opheusden was the centre of much fighting involving British, American and Belgian forces following the failure of Operation Market Garden to cross the Rhine at Arnhem. Inside the town hall here is a Memorial Screaming Eagle to the 101st AB Division and another on an outside wall. Also there is this Piron Brigade emblem in recognition of the Brigades 3rd Battalion clearing of Opheusden on 18 April 1945. The Brigade landed on Gold Beach on D-Day and moved north just inside the French coastline, their progress marked now by a series of memorials similar to this one. The full story of the Brigade is told in Au Galop de Nos Blindes, written by Lieutenant-General Roger Dewandre of the Belgian army who, as a Lieutenant, landed with the Pirons.
