325th Glider, 504th PIR & Polish Para Memorial, Holland
The dramatic rusting parachutes, designed by Leo Gerritsen and Henk van Hout, were erected on 17 September 1985. They commemorate the fact that these fields, designated landing area O, were used as the DZs and LZs of the US 325th Glider Infantry, the 504th PIR and later by one battalion of General Sosabowskis 1st Polish Independant Parchute Brigade on 23 September. Originally the parachutes were to be coloured red - for the ammunition that the paras carried, white - for the bandages, blue - for equipment and yellow - for food. The northern element of the 504th that were tasked to take the Grave bridge landed here. That bridge was numbered 11 and bridge 7 at Heumen, Bridge 8 at Malden and bridge 9 at Hatert were also targets but the Germans managed to blow 8 and 9. The Memorial is at Overasselt just east of the Grave bridge. Date: 2001
