Aerial view of Nell Lane Hospital, Withington, Manchester, opened in 1855 as Chorlton Union workhouse. The cross shaped block (left of centre) was the main workhouse building. The row of long blocks (above centre) was a new infirmary opened in 1866. Designed by Thomas Worthington, it was the first pavilion plan infirmary built in England. The site later became known as Withington Hospital
