The Mohne Dam; Second World War, c. 1940
Aerial photograph showing the Mohne Dam and reservoir (top) before the Dambusters raid of May 1943. This photograph was probably taken before the Second World War as there are no obvious signs of German military protection of the dam. On 16th May 1943 Royal Air Force Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron attacked and breached this dam during an operation which later became better known as the Dambusters Raid
