Miss Muriel Perry, Soldiers Free Buffet at Victoria Station

Miss Muriel Perry, the capable quartermaster of the Sailors and Soldiers Free Buffet at Victoria Station during the First World War, where 200, 000 men were fed at a cost of one penny per head. They were given meat sandwiches, cake, tea and fruit. Miss Perry had been working on the buffet since the outbreak of war, first in a small way for Belgian refugees and later on, after a letter in The Times which pointed out that soldiers were returned from leave cold and hungry, permission was obtained to feed the soldiers from the front and travelling from one camp to another. The buffet costs 1000 per month, and was supported by voluntary subscriptions and had no paid labour. The honorary treasurer was Mrs Douglas McGarel Hogg. Date: 1917
