Major (Brevet Lt-Col) James John Hugonin, 4th Light Dragoons
Major (Brevet Lt-Col) James John Hugonin, 4th Light Dragoons, with his black trumpeter, two troopers and the regiment beyond, 1820 (c). Oil on canvas by James Canterbury Pardon (1794 (c)-1862), 1820 (c). James John Hugonin, the presumed sitter, joined the 4th Dragoons as a cornet in 1795, and became Lieutenant the same year. He subsequently became a captain in 1803, a major in 1811, and he was made a brevet Lt-Col in 1819. At the battle of Toulouse, when he commanded the regiment in the absence of Lt-Col Dalbiac, he received the Army Gold Medal. He retired from the regiment in 1821 and died at Nursted House, near Petersfield on 30 January 1854. Date: circa 1820
